I've heard a rumor that exile will be closing down due to lack of funds. Is this true?

In all honesty, I don't think that is anywhere near true. The dev team does this on their freetime; they're not expecting compensation for this, and thus they aren't completely dependent on it. Sure, the fund goal not being met can have an impact on the "when"'s of update releases, but seeing as they're still actively working on making the next update... well, you may want to consult the source for your 'rumors.'
