Helping a Friend

20 posts in this topic

Ok, so have a friend who is an Amra virgin.  And its been a while since I originally setup the game.  He purchased Arma 3 Apex and has it up and running, downloaded the a3launcher. The issue is the launcher throws an error when it runs as if it cannot connect to steam.. I had him make sure that steam was running, that he had ran arma and setup a profile, and had at least gone through the VR training to get used to some of the functions.  Yet, launcher will not see steam or arma? Any ideas of what needs to be done I have forgotten?

This is a BRAND new gaming system, just turned on for the first time a few days ago. Fresh install of steam/arma and launcher.

#1 - Use Steam MANUALLY to try to install ANY mod.

#2 - Use Bohemia's built-in launcher - It works good and unlike A3L, it sees the newest CUP updates...  ;)

#3 - Check firewall settings AND router port settings.

:)

You need to launch the game via steam at-least once, that way it can finish installing.

I knew about that step, had him go through the VR training and some of the basic training, had him create a gamer profile. Main issue seems to be the launcher just errors out saying it cannot contact steam? I did ask him check his firewall settings. Hes also made sure all parts of arma have been updated. so at a lost.

ill have him give that a shot. Also will shoot him a seed file with the server data maybe that would also help.

Do not do any of these things. A3L sees all updates, as it runs via steam, so that would be your steam client not seeing updates, not A3L.

Original Post:  "...The issue is the launcher throws an error when it runs as if it cannot connect to steam..."

@Monkeynutz  "...A3L sees all updates, as it runs via steam, so that would be your steam client not seeing updates, not A3L..."

#1 - A3 does NOT see ALL UPDATES!  Within the past 2 weeks, people have COMPLAINED ABOUT A3 NOT SEEING THE RECENT CUP UPDATES RIGHT AWAY!

#2 - If A3 REQUIRES admin rights and it runs without this access, A3 WILL FAIL!

#3 - It is a CHAIN PROCESS!  A3 connects to Steam, Steam connects to the internet.  If ANY one of these links fail, to the END USER, A3 DOES NOT WORK!

#4 - He stated CLEARLY - "AS IF".  This means it BEHAVES like this.  It does NOT mean it is!

#5 - What if the EU was using an OLD AND OUTDATED version of A3???

#6 - A3 is a KNOWN 'problem program'.  There are THOUSANDS of people complaining about A3 and Steam NOT WORKING.  Try Google.

#7 - What if the A3 that was downloaded is corrupt?  And yes, a program CAN BE CORRUPTED AND STILL RUN!

@Monkeynutz - It would appear you FAILED to read the original post and now you wish to make accusations which are WRONG.

He stated that A3 did NOT work.  So you 'advice' is faulty at best.

My solution would DETERMINE WITHOUT A DOUBT that there are NO OTHER ISSUES that could cause A3 not to function.  The only one I forgot is the 'admin rights' when launching.

If you cannot MANUALLY download updates from Steam, guess what A3 WILL NOT WORK!

If you have ports closed that should be open, guess what?  STEAM WILL NOT WORK!

Bohemia's launcher DOES WORK and will TEST:  Internet connection, Steam, and ARMA - all at the SAME TIME.

I have been repairing people's computers (hardware and software) and have trained/supervised 200+ techs as a career for 35+ years...how many decades have you been troubleshooting?

I would suggest you stick to something you KNOW as opposed to THINKING and in the process, giving POOR AND FAULTY ADVICE.

;)

Hey I still didn't understand this. Can you break it down big bird and cookie monster style?

Please make sure to use more CAPSLOCK and bold lettering with underlines.

Thanks.
