I'm sure we would have added a female character but it just wasn't on our timeline. Plus I don't think we had an animator

The reason why there are no female characters in Arma is a bit technical. Basically, the player model is bound to the uniform. If you pick up a ghillie suit, your player model will show a ghillie. When you "wear" a Bambi overall, your player will show that Bambi model. The only thing that can be customized on the player model is the head texture. The head texture also affects the arms texture a bit (skin tone), but only very slightly. You will see that head textures with a dark skin color will have unrealistically bright arms and legs.

If you want a female in Arma you would have to duplicate all uniforms that exist and turn them into a female version. Most of them are closed-source, so this is impossible for hobbyists. Females also move differently than males, meaning one would have to adjust animations, too. It took us three (fucking) months of trying to get a single axe-swing animation working in Arma. Getting a full body with hundreds of animations to work would cause us to commit suicide. Not to mention all character sounds, like breathing, bleeding, screaming and much more. Given that there are maybe 50 different uniforms and skins available, that would be a tedious amount of work - and an economic disaster for every developer/company.

There are some mods out there that offer female characters. But they do have the limitation that they cannot wear "male" uniforms. For the simple fact that their body would then look exactly like for males and that would look dumb. This results in male players being able to wear ten times more uniforms, thus having an advantage over the female variant.

We have a female developer amongst us. But she knows about the insane amount of work behind adding female characters to Arma. Now you know, too :)
