Searching rubble/debris for chance loot

Hey

Was thinking about having a search function that allows my players to scroll search on specific objects with a percentage change of finding some items.

i.e. scroll search a car wreck for a chance of finding some scrap metal. Or even a rubbish heap for a change for finding a used tin can (trolling admins.. ) etc

Any hints on how to accomplish this would be awesome.
