Personal Server Rig - Specs help

13 posts in this topic

Current server specs:

Ram: 16gb DDR3 1333MHz (I think)

CPU: AMD Athlon X4 750k @ 3.40GHz

OS: Windows Server 2012 R2

I want to run(I already run the server with no problems, but wanna upgrade the CPU just because of arma):

TS Server (24/7)

Arma 3 Exile server (24/7 40-60 slots with restarts)

Now i heard AMD Cpu's are NOT good for Arma 3 servers, so i was looking to upgrade it to an Intel cpu, but i dont wanna break the bank, i was not looking to spend over £250(Hopefully motherboard included.).

Anyone got any recommendation, do keep in mind i would like to reuse the 16gb DDR3 with the new cpu so a newer cpu such as Skylake(DDR4 right?) won't be an option.

Yeah might go for the  Xeon E5-1620 seems alright

Edit: there goes that idea, motherboards for that CPU seem to be rare, from my research anyway, if there is one it's expensive..

Just saw this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/INTEL-Core-i5-4460-3-2Ghz-ASUS-H81M-PLUS-Motherboard-CPU-Bundle-/121180334392?hash=item1c36e92938:g:k9IAAOxys6dSPY7B

What do you guys think?

You said single core performance is key... well does that mean cores doesnt matter, so i can go with a dual core such as an Intel Core i3-4370 rather than an quad core?

You could but an i3 has lower cache than an i5 or i7 and this will negatively impact performance.

I paid exactly 250 USD for a i5 4690 and motherboard combo a year ago. Works great. Would be about 60% faster than your athlon in single core performance, and motherboards are cheap.

Taking it you got that in a sale?

Sort of, but not really. I didn't get it on any holiday sale or anything special. Portatech.com. Super awesome deals on that site all the time.

Here's the exact combo I picked up, it's now a few bucks more expensive now, but not much.

It's not a very well-known site, but I've dealt with them and had absolutely no issues. Their packaging of the items was superb, and they even put it together, test it before shipping. Check them out, they have any combination you can think of, and you can customize your bundle.
