Hardware Latest Topicshttps://exile.majormittens.co.uk/forum/120-hardware/Hardware Latest TopicsenServer From Homehttps://exile.majormittens.co.uk/topic/21153-server-from-home/ I know this question has been asked over and over with mixed answers but i thought id list my PC and hopefully someone with a bit more knowledge about home server hosting could help me make my decision, I run my servers from a provider, not going to name the provider but it uses TC Admin. Now im not to sure if its just this provider thats having the problem with TC Admin its running SLOW is hell! and its been like this for a while now, Also when stopping the server to modify anything sometimes it doesnt fully stop and i have to email the provider for them to stop it fully so i could delete a file which could take a while for a responce.. anyways its starting to get right on my nerves. At the moment i have only the one PC which i play other games on such as Dayz so obviously if im running my servers from this pc would it be a problem or not? My pc spec is :

Intel Core i7-6700K  @ 4.00GHz

32GB Ram, thinking of upgrading to 64 eventually if this will help

Samsung SSD

Have a fast internet aswell 200mb Virgin (UK)

What do you guys think??

Home Dedicated Systemhttps://exile.majormittens.co.uk/topic/22405-home-dedicated-system/ At the moment i'm torn between buying my own dedicated box system for hosting my server or renting a dedicated system from for example Online.net, My question is if i'm hosting from my home will this have an impact on my internet for playing games, I THINK its all about your upload speed for server running? and download speed for general playing (I might be wrong) As much as I love running my servers I still like to play other games online and so does my other half, Having a server from home will this effect me in anyway? Or am i better just renting a dedicated system? At the moment i rent a dedicated game server not a system. Thanks

Anyone ever have this problem on a dedicated box?https://exile.majormittens.co.uk/topic/21291-anyone-ever-have-this-problem-on-a-dedicated-box/ I run two Exile servers on a dedicated box using Firedaemon. Since yesterday, I've had a problem where it's been taking a very long time for my server to start. For example, here's the beginning of my server log:

Home PC Dedicated Serverhttps://exile.majormittens.co.uk/topic/20634-home-pc-dedicated-server/ So I would like peopes thoughts on something.

Would do you think about running your own dedicated server on your personal machine?

Just want to hear what people think.

yet another dedicated server threadhttps://exile.majormittens.co.uk/topic/21299-yet-another-dedicated-server-thread/ I've been server hopping for a while now and cant really find one that really makes me happy. So, screw it, I want to have my own server running my own mods!

I would like to keep the cost as cheap as possible, and would prefer a server running on a dedicated PC rather than a actual "server".

where's the point of diminishing returns, or the point where I can get decent performance without throwing money away?

I'm not knowledgeable on the whole server thing, but I've got 2 friends on board with the idea as well.

what parts would I need? I would only need a server capable of hosting 30 ish slots but 40-60 would be nice.

include models & prices pls

my internet specs:

Ping: 20 ms

Down: 45-50 Mbps

Up: 5.8 - 6 mbps

Also I wouldn't be opposed to keeping the server at one of the above mentioned friend's houses, considering their internet service is likely better than my own and they would be contributing cost wise and to maintaining it.

Personal Server Rig - Specs helphttps://exile.majormittens.co.uk/topic/21008-personal-server-rig-specs-help/ Current server specs:

Ram: 16gb DDR3 1333MHz (I think)

CPU: AMD Athlon X4 750k @ 3.40GHz

OS: Windows Server 2012 R2

I want to run(I already run the server with no problems, but wanna upgrade the CPU just because of arma):

TS Server (24/7)

Arma 3 Exile server (24/7 40-60 slots with restarts)

Now i heard AMD Cpu's are NOT good for Arma 3 servers, so i was looking to upgrade it to an Intel cpu, but i dont wanna break the bank, i was not looking to spend over £250(Hopefully motherboard included.).

Anyone got any recommendation, do keep in mind i would like to reuse the 16gb DDR3 with the new cpu so a newer cpu such as Skylake(DDR4 right?) won't be an option.

Dedicated Server Performancehttps://exile.majormittens.co.uk/topic/16898-dedicated-server-performance/ Hi, I'm looking for a secondary opinion:

I'd like to know how many Exile Servers you believe could be ran on the following server specs, imagining that they were 50 slots servers each one containing average of 15 players:

  • Intel Xeon E3 1245v2 4c/8t @ 3.2GHz
  • 32GB RAM
  • 2 x 240GB SSD's

AND

  • Intel Xeon E5 1620v2 4c/8t @ 3.9GHz
  • 64GB RAM
  • 3 x 300GB SSD's

Many thanks,

George.

Best specs for a server?https://exile.majormittens.co.uk/topic/17512-best-specs-for-a-server/ Hello,

I'm looking at renting a new server from ovh(the best value for money hosting company I found) and have a choice between a 20 core xeon which runs at 2.6ghz and a 4 core i7 which runs at 4.7ghz. Before everyone jumps on the more ghz is better bandwagon I did some tests and found that when I gave my server more cores 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 and then used the HT cores on my current box the server FPS increased by around 3.5 for each core I gave it. The server uses all the CPU resources I throw at it because it is full pop. This seems to fly in the face of all that I have read about arms only using at Max 2 cores and never more than 4 so I am now tempted by the 20 core. Why is this so? Would it make more sense to go with the 20 core and offset the speed drop with more cores?

Xeon E3 1245v2 vs i7 4790khttps://exile.majormittens.co.uk/topic/17202-xeon-e3-1245v2-vs-i7-4790k/ Hi,

I'm comparing servers now, and I found 2 interesting different servers (SoYouStart)
Both have +- same specs, only CPU is different.

Xeon E3 1245v2 vs i7 4790k

I want to run if possible 2 Exile Servers and 1 OverPoch (Arma 2 obv) server on this machine.

What CPU would be better in my case? I think they are both very good, but I heard somewhere that Xeon proccesors run pretty good with Arma...

Thanks for responding :)

Personal Dedicated Server Suggestionshttps://exile.majormittens.co.uk/topic/16166-personal-dedicated-server-suggestions/ Alright, so I've been having this question for some time but was unsure where to ask it. Though this question doesn't entirely deal with the ExileMod specifically, I thought this was an appropriate place to ask.

I am interested in purchasing a physical dedicated server box to run servers off of from my home. To be clear I don't intend to be the next CCG, I simply want to use the box to run a few servers to play with a few friends. Now I don't plan on having all of these servers online 24/7, only a few I intend to have running all the time.

Here are the servers I'm interested in running, to be on the safe side lets assume that 10 players could be on any of the servers without issue:

  • Arma 2 - DayZ Overpoch (Not 24/7)
  • Arma 3 - Exile w/ multiple addons (Not 24/7)
  • Minecraft - w/ mods +100 (24/7)
  • Teamspeak -  (24/7)

I'm not looking for a box that's going to cost an arm and a leg, lets keep it realistic here. I need something powerful enough to run these server but it doesn't need to be powerful enough to run them all at once ( I'll never have them all running at the same time ).

So, down to the real deal. What should I be looking for that can do what I want? Should I look for a server box or should I build one in a PC case? This where I run into trouble, I'm not sure what I need that will do what I want. If those of you that know a thing or two on the hardware side of things could make some suggestions that would be awesome.

Also I live in Canada so if you could please keep that in mind when suggesting hardware I don't want to pay an absurd amount in shipping fees. Thanks in advance for taking the time to help me :)

SSD required?https://exile.majormittens.co.uk/topic/14787-ssd-required/ Hi,

Im planning on hosting multipile exile servers on 1 dedicated machine.

Im planning on renting a server at SoYouStart, with 32GB DDR3,
Intel Xeon E3 1245v2 @ 3.4GHz, and 250 mbit bandwith.

First question, I think this server should be able to run mutlipile Exile servers, right?
Second question, do you guys recommend an SSD for this project? I've heard that I might run into IO problems with 'just' a HDD, and I've heard that it won't change much, only boot time of the server. So should I go for an SSD or not?

Thanks for responding!

Paul

( Link to the server I want to rent, I don't mean this as an ad: http://www.soyoustart.com/en/essential-servers/ , right now I'm looking to the E3-SSD-5 )

Thank you if your interested just pm me.

All we would want is atlis.map that is already setup, infiSTAR i already setup on the server

Server Not Public... No Direct IP Join Eitherhttps://exile.majormittens.co.uk/topic/14126-server-not-public-no-direct-ip-join-either/ So I got an Exile server up and running. I can join it. I can play on it. Runs great! However, it is not showing up on the public Internet server list and also players cannot join using my IP.

I port forwarded 2302 - 2305 on both Windows Firewall and my Router. The thing about the router is, I'm not sure which choice I am supposed to PF on. My router has three choices to use port forwarding, only one of which can use the host program at a time - The router, my PC, or the IP address. I've tried all three and still no luck. I followed ALL of the directions posted here about the install but still nothing.

I've exhausted all resources that I can think of. If any of you have any suggestions or can point me to a thread I may have missed that would be awesome. Thanks!

Another "What do you think of this dedicated" threadhttps://exile.majormittens.co.uk/topic/12819-another-what-do-you-think-of-this-dedicated-thread/ Here's a dedicated server I'm considering. What do you think of the performance potential of it?

Core: Intel E3-1271V3 4 x 3.9 GHz Turbo
Port Speed: 100 Mbps (Unmetered)
Outbound Bandwidth (Inbound is Free): 10 TB
Operating System: Windows Server 2012 R2

I'm currently running 2 Exile servers on a VPS and they work fine but if I fire up a test server at the same time, it's bringing the CPU usage up kinda high so I'm thinking of a dedicated server.

Possible to run Exile server on PC?https://exile.majormittens.co.uk/topic/10400-possible-to-run-exile-server-on-pc/ So i've been thinking about hosting an exile server for a while and was wondering if I could host it on my PC, I know most public servers either run on paid hosted servers or their own Dedi boxes used specifically for game servers, I will only be hosting it for me and a few of my friends, my specs will be below. If its not possible or will be to high of a load, can someone recommend some cheap paid for server hosting for exile servers.

Specs:

Intel i5- 4690K not overclocked

8GB Ram

Gtx 760

Recommendations for better performancehttps://exile.majormittens.co.uk/topic/10681-recommendations-for-better-performance/ Hi all,

I recently built a custom server for exile to hopefully be able to run 80+ slots with lots of AI and zombies. I've had the server about a quarter full (around 20 players) and I started to notice a slight dip in fps. I was wondering if there was anything I could do without reducing AI anymore.

Here are the specs:

i-7 4790k  -> 4.0Ghz base ... Turbo -> 4.4Ghz

16gb cosair ram -> 1600MHz ...fastest motherboard supports

128gb SSD -->  93,000 IOPS read

ASRock E3C226D2I Mini ITX Server Motherboard

Ubuntu 14.03

Mysql 5.7 hosted on the same machine.

Gigabit up/down link

I don't have the option to overclock, and I wouldn't even if the server board could for stability issues. I run two headless clients for the zombies.  Are there any options to offload some of the work to clients/other server threads?

Is this enough?https://exile.majormittens.co.uk/topic/10770-is-this-enough/ Hello,

I was wondering if these server specs are enough to run a exile server.

2 X INTEL XEON E5520 (8 cores, 16 threads, 4.5ghz)

16GB RAM

100mb/s

Thank you!

Going to start a serverhttps://exile.majormittens.co.uk/topic/8679-going-to-start-a-server/ Hi guys,

I'm going to be upgrading my CPU soon from an i5 4670k to an i7 4790k.  I've also got an extra R9 270X lying around. With the extra CPU and GPU, I want to go the whole mile and just setup my own Exile server.

Specs will be:

  • CPU: i5 4670k @ 4.2Ghz
  • GPU: R9 270X
  • RAM: GSkill Ripjaws 8GB @ 1600Mhz
  • SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 120GB

I have two questions:

First, what operating system should I try to use?  I don't want to shell out for another Windows license.  Then again, I have absolutely no experience with Linux.  Any suggestions?

Second, with the rig mentioned above, what kind of server FPS might I be expecting?

P.S. I'm thinking of setting up this server because I live in South Korea.  I have a very fast and very stable internet connection.  The main reason that I'm considering starting this server is that there are quite a few Korean players, but there is a dearth of Korean servers for whatever reason.

Anyway, thanks for the input in suggestions, it will all be appreciated.

Regards,

pindleton
